Ruthie leaned against the door and dragged in a slow breath, letting the rose-scented air surround her. She wondered how many days they would last. It had almost been a week since the pickup snafu. Sam had shown up that night with an enormous bouquet of sterling roses—their soft lavender color matching the twilight behind him—and apology sundaes. He’d also verbally apologized to all of them.

Luckily, his no-show hadn’t upset the kids. Sam had explained that he’d written the appointment on the wrong day, and Ben said he did that, too, sometimes, but Ella always caught it. “Don’t you have someone who does that for you?” Ben had asked.

“I did. Guess I’ll need to hire someone new.” From the tone in his voice, Ruthie was pretty sure the someone had been Bobby or someone who worked for Bobby, and she’d decided it wouldn’t be the night to talk with him about going public about his eleven-year-old twins.

“Maybe Wren could do it?” Ella had suggested. “She’s very organized and friendly.”

“I’m sure she is, but she probably has her hands full with the baby, Miller, and their business. Not to mention saving my bacon by picking you guys up. I’ll figure it out,” he’d said, but Ruthie still didn’t know if he had.

She’d add that to her growing list of crap-we-need-to-talk-about. But every time they had a few moments to themselves, they ended up kissing. And kissing some more.

“Maybe we need a family meeting?” she muttered, as she crossed the room to her still clean kitchen. She’d given it a quick wipe down after her lunch, and Sam and the kids weren’t back yet from their errands, so the counters were still spotless and the sink empty. They usually had a weekly meeting during the school year to make sure everyone knew what was going on, but it had fallen off the radar under the lazy days of summer, and Sam.

She frowned as the calendar caught her eye. Sam was leaving soon, and then it would be six more weeks before school started. Camp was in session until the end of August, so their days would be full, but the nights would drag. Sam had filled a lot of voids for all of them. They’d miss him during the season, but before he left, Ruthie planned to set up a weekly time for Ben and Ella to FaceTime with him.

She assumed they’d revert to text and calls when necessary. Whatever was growing between them would wither when he was gone. Ruthie didn’t want a long-distance relationship. If she was going to let someone in her life and heart on a full-time basis, he needed to have his butt in the same zip code. Plus, she’d already wasted too much time and tears waiting for Sam to come back. The fact that he hadn’t because he hadn’t known, didn’t excuse him. Her head knew the difference, but her bruised heart didn’t. And she knew it wouldn’t take much for him to break her heart again.
